Thought leadership articles in trade magazines

Your expertise should not stop at your own website or LinkedIn profile. Thought leadership in trade publications gives you another way to bring your knowledge, experience and point of view into a professional conversation, while building recognition around the subjects you actually know something about. The goal is not simply to get your name published, but to create something useful enough that people remember the thinking behind it.

My recommendation for a smooth start

Turn your expertise into something worth publishing

Start with a real point of view

Everyone can have an opinion. Thought leadership starts when you can explain why you think something, connect it to your experience and give people a reason to look at a subject differently. That could come from a trend you are seeing, a recurring problem in your market, original research, a strong observation or a lesson you have learned through your work. With AI making generic industry content easier to produce, first-hand experience, specificity and a recognisable perspective have become even more important.

Write for the reader, not for your company

A thought leadership article should not read like a company brochure with an expert's name added at the top. Trade publications have their own audience, editorial context and subjects they care about, so the article needs to offer something useful beyond promoting your business. Your expertise is the source, but the reader's question, problem or interest is what gives the article its shape.

Build authority through relevant publications

Visibility only matters when it means something

Being published can increase visibility, but visibility on its own is not the point. Recent thought leadership discussions increasingly focus on credibility, relevance and the quality of the contribution rather than simply being seen everywhere. A well-placed article in a publication that your audience actually reads can help build familiarity and trust around your expertise in a way that another generic piece of content cannot.

Let one strong idea travel further

A good thought leadership article can become part of a bigger content system. An idea developed for a trade magazine might later become a LinkedIn post, a website article, a case study or a PR angle, each adapted to its own channel rather than copied word for word. That gives your expertise more than one place to live and makes the work behind a strong idea more useful over time.

Find the right publication and the right angle

Relevance comes before the media list

You do not need to be everywhere. The useful question is where the people you want to reach are already paying attention and which publications make sense for your subject. I look at the publication, its audience, its editorial focus and the conversation happening around the topic before deciding where an article or pitch belongs.

Make the pitch worth opening

Getting published is not simply a matter of sending the same pitch to fifty editors. With AI making it easier to produce generic press releases, pitches and expert content at scale, relevance and personalisation matter more. A good pitch gives the publication a clear reason to care, shows that you understand its audience and offers an angle that is genuinely useful rather than promotional.

Lisalotte was part of a PR team that helped us in my previous company. She was quick at understanding the brief and made sure that a story is written in such a way that it is easy to understand and based on the facts available. Clear communication helps in shaving and shaping the story to a great result.
